3 Essentials to Get Over the Humps

A few weeks ago I spent time with Mary & Charles – they’ve been married over 50 years and they shared a bit of their wisdom. They also agreed to be filmed. We spent time at a studio, and then answered a few questions after dinner at home. (You can see the post from last week here.)

So, we’re back with Mary & Charles again today – and they’re going to first share how they met… (it includes horse-drawn wagons, a near accident, a hero, a lamp-post, and cake!)

Mary & Charles have been married 54 years – not all years were good years.

There was a period of time after their children were grown that their interests were divided. Mary had become a Christian and Charles was very focused on his career and had not yet committed his life to Christ – their marriage was in jeopardy.

I have very much enjoyed meeting Mary & Charles, they are a delightful couple and they make me laugh, they have given me the blessing of encouragement. I look forward to retirement with my husband and to the day when we can say that we’ve been married for 54 years! (right now we are at 25). Their story is similar to ours in that it was me who became a believer first. Then there was a 14 year wait before my husband became a follower of Christ. Those gap years, while we wives wait, can be very, very hard ones (Mary knows what I’m talking about), but you grow amazingly close to Jesus through them!

Thank you for sharing, Robyn. (that would be a good blog topic, “encouragement through the gap years”, huh?)

If we can just keep our eyes open enough to focus on what COULD be in in the future – 20-30-40- years ahead – maybe the humps woudn’t be so jarring..
