Dating  for 12 days in a row was a lot more time consuming than I thought it would be.  Fortunately our 12 Date Dare between our birthdays had a long weekend smack dab in the middle.

On the holiday Monday we visited a local icon, The Angus Barn on our soup tour…

Angus Barn Collage

This was our second try for a good French Onion Soup. Still nothing to tout.  Outwardly it looked good, but the flavor just wasn’t evident. Rob ate it and then shared my soup.

My soup was a bowl of beef and vegetable with a dark, hearty flavor, many chunks of tender beef and a few vegetables. The best part of the meal? The homemade soda crackers and spreadable cheddar cheeses!

The Angus Barn is a well-known Raleigh landmark. It was a 50 acre “field of dreams” kind of venture, started in 1959 by two brothers, located in the middle of no-where between Raleigh & Durham. It’s become a thriving restaurant, and grounds with banquet facilities.

Despite its rarefied aura, the dining area is packed so close together, the couple at the next table and I were brushing shoulders. (Forget any kind of intimate conversation.) In addition, we were in an aisle with customers and wait-staff flowing past. I’m glad we were only there for soup – a full meal would have easily hit us in the wallet for over $150. and I prefer a more intimate experience for that kind of money.

Is there a local restaurant “icon” in your town you’d recommend?

Fireside Fun

After our somewhat disappointing soup experience, we went home.  The sky was beginning to darken, and our Date #6 was almost ready.

To increase the fun, our adult kids came to join our fireside date.

We live on a few acres of property with a couple cows, six inherited out-door cats, chickens and ducks that visit every afternoon, deer, possums, a fox, groundhogs, and a million frogs. (I won’t even mentioning the creepy-crawly bugs.)

We’ve had huge bonfires, but this night was just perfect for a little blaze. Alex, our son, and Robert got it started.

Lighting up the Night

The smell of wood-smoke, the stars twinkling above us, the sound of a million frogs, the taste of roasted marshmallows, and singing praise and worship songs – it was a lovely end to a long weekend.

Even a frog hopped up to enjoy the fire!

Have you ever had a camp fire in your backyard?

Our First Date

2nd Date

3rd Date

4th Date

We decided to try this series of posts because of a dare at The Happy Wives Club. So often we marriage bloggers give out great ideas, and Robert and I thought we should walk the talk… to make the ideas real. We’re learning a lot about each other through these forays. (I’ll write our observations at the end of the 12 dates.)
