Staying emotionally, spiritually and intellectually full takes concentrated action. My sunroom is my working space (it also doubles as our dining room). It’s a great place to write, read and reflect.
Here’s what I’m reading to fill the well:
The Amplified Bible - this is my favorite, but I do read the NIV and NKJV. Most references on this website are from the NIV and NKJV.
Robert and I first encountered Bob Goff in another book – Donald Miller’s “A Million Miles in a Thousand Years”. It got us curious about this man and his wife, Sweet Maria. I wrote a blog post about them here. “Love Does” is 31 chapters of awesome stories – uplifting, funny and insightful. It’s a treasure. It’s had a hand in shaping how I want to live in 2013!
Choosing Gratitude: Your Journey to Joy - by Nancy Leigh DeMoss. Gratitude is a choice. If we fail to chose it, by default we choose ingratitude. And once allowed into the heart, ingratitude does not come by itself but with a lot of other seedy companions that only succeed in stealing joy. To not choose gratitude – daily and deliberately – is more costly than we usually realize. And when we do choose a lifestyle of heartfelt, humble gratitude, we are mindful of the benefits received from our gracious Savior and those He has placed around us. Using this book as a supplement for a Bible/Book study in October 2012 - http://givingthanks2012.blogspot.com/
7: An Experimental Mutiny Against Excess - by Jen Hatmaker It’s a book about an experiment in which each month for 7 months, Jen Hatmaker and sometimes her entire family fasted in an area she felt they were excessive in: media, stress, possessions, shopping, food, clothes, and waste.
The Meaning of Marriage – by Timothy & Kathy Keller “Facing the Complexities of Commitment with the Wisdom of God”
Using the Bible as his guide, coupled with insightful commentary from his wife of thirty-six years, Kathy, Timothy Keller shows that God created marriage to bring us closer to him and to bring us more joy in our lives. It is a glorious relationship that is also the most misunderstood and mysterious.
Love That Lasts – by Gary& Betsy Ricucci “When Marriage Meets Grace”
Marriage is a profound and marvelous mystery established by God for his glory-and that is for our good. So many marital relationships never reach their greatest potential because they have the fatal limitation of being focused on one another. When our focus is solely on God, our marriages have the potential to thrive and not merely survive.
Desire – by John Eldredge. “The Journey we must take to Find the Life God Offers.”
Can we find a life filled with passion, without being overwhelmed by it? … we discover that God is the author of our deepest desires. He has given us desire, and he loves to fulfill our hearts’ desires. For as the Psalms declare, “Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart” (37:4).
Emotionally Healthy Spirituality – by Peter Scazzero. This book was recommended by a blogger – unfortunately I CAN NOT remember who and on which blog I read about it! (sigh) This is the down-side of reading a lot of blogs…
